Carbon backup app hits the Play Store in free and premium versions

Koushik Dutta, developer of popular apps like DeskSMS and Clockwork Mod recovery, has been teasing up with betas of his new app, Carbon. Those betas have expired today, but the official app is now available in the Play Store in two versions, a free and paid app. The app backs up your apps and data to an SD card, or cloud storage if you don’t have enough memory on device to store all of your apps. Rooted devices can just use the application itself, but unrooted users will need a companion desktop application to get it working. Motorola users are left out in the cold on this one, though; there’s a bug in Motorola’s software the breaks Android’s backup features.

The free version of the app is ad-supported and lacks a few features of the premium version, such as Android-to-Android sync and cloud sync. There’s also a scheduled backup feature planned soon for the premium version. If you’re running Android 4.0 or above, hit the links below to try out the app.

Android, iOS wipe the floor with rivals, account for 92% of smartphone shipments in Q4

Strategy Analytics: Android and Apple iOS Capture a Record 92 Percent Share of Global Smartphone Shipments in Q4 2012

Boston, MA – January 28, 2013 – According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually to reach 217 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Android and Apple iOS together accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually from 157.0 million units in Q4 2011 to 217.0 million in Q4 2012. Global smartphone shipments for the full year reached a record 700.1 million units in 2012, increasing robustly from 490.5 million units in 2011. Global shipment growth slowed from 64 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2012 as penetration of smartphones began to mature in developed regions such as North America and Western Europe.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “We estimate 152.1 million Android smartphones were shipped globally in Q4 2012, nearly doubling from 80.6 million units in Q4 2011. Android’s share of the global smartphone market has surged from 51 percent to 70 percent over the past year, crushing Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake. Almost half-a-billion Android smartphones were shipped in total worldwide during 2012. Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time. Android’s challenge for 2013 will be to defend its leadership, not only against Apple, but also against an emerging wave of hungry challengers that includes Microsoft, Blackberry, Firefox and Tizen.”

Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, “Apple grew 29 percent annually and shipped 47.8 million smartphones worldwide for 22 percent marketshare in Q4 2012, dipping slightly from 24 percent a year earlier. Combined together, Apple and Android accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter of 2012. The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs.”

Android Poised to Take Another Bite out of Apple

Amid Apple’s disappointing earnings report and subsequent stock slide, it appears that Google’s Android platform is poised to take another bite out of Cupertino-based tech giant in the first quarter of 2013, according to potential customers.

New analysis by Prosper Insights and Analytics™ examined shoppers’ consideration of the four top-selling smartphone operating systems: Android™, Apple iPhone®, BlackBerry®, and Windows Phone. This examination revealed that among consumers thinking about a mobile phone purchase over the next 90 days (January, February, or March 2013), Android-powered devices are the most popular operating system under consideration. In fact, these shoppers are 51% more likely to be mulling over an Android smartphone compared to the Apple iPhone.

Specifically, more than half (53%) of these potential short-term smartphone shoppers are thinking about syncing with an Android device, leading consideration of the Apple iPhone (35%), Windows Phone (19%), and BlackBerry (11%).

What’s especially concerning for Apple is its seemingly slipping grasp on the two younger generations, who typically lean toward “what’s next” and are most likely to be potentially plunking down cash for a new mobile phone over the next three months. Three out of five Millennials (63%) contemplating a mobile purchase during Q1 2013 are looking at Android smartphones; that figure drops to 37% for these youngsters considering an Apple iPhone.

And that disparity grows even wider with Gen X-ers. Among potential near-term shoppers born between 1965 and 1982, 59% are considering an Android-powered device. For the Apple iPhone, that figure drops nearly 50% to 32%.

However, much like what was seen when measuring the buzz surrounding the Android and Apple operating systems, the Android “hold” isn’t quite so strong among the older generations – Boomers (1946-1964) and Silents (pre-1946). While a slightly higher percentage of each of these groups is considering an Android purchase in the next 90 days versus the iPhone, it appears that the competition for these potential shoppers is more evenly divided – so Siri may have a better shot at bending ears among these more mature generations.

Besides the Android dilemma, with younger shoppers open to seeking out “what’s new” in mobile elsewhere, it appears that Tim Cook Co are also up against an aging fan base – and that’s a big potential problem [just ask Sears].

But competition inspires innovation, right? I look forward to seeing how Apple attempts to up the ante.

Evidence Of A White Nexus 4

We might have our first view of the white Nexus 4 on the same day the standard black model returned to the Play Store. We heard there might be a white version in the works last year but this is the first time we see any “evidence” of the existence of such a device. Speaking of evidence, there’s not much. Phone Arena reported the image above was submitted by an anonymous source. Examining the EXIF data shows the image was taken by an LG-E975, better known as the Optimus G. While that little piece of information adds an element of intrigue to the story, it does little to validate the authenticity. Put your debunking hats on and hit the source for the full size image. I’ll keep my fingers crossed they release a version with more storage, not more white.

Android 4.0 Dual-Core TV STICK H5 to Make World Debut

SHENZHEN, Jan. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — On January 10, SHENZHEN EGREAT TECHNOLOGY CO.,LTD (Egreat, a China national High-and-New Technology Enterprise and a leading world brand in the high-definition industry) announced that its overseas business-to-consumer (B2C) shopping mall has gone online, meaning Egreat has taken a solid step forward in exploiting the overseas market. Meanwhile, during the Chinese lunar new year, Egreat’s latest intelligent model, the Android 4.0 TV STICK H5, will make its debut, injecting new blood into the high-definition player industry.

Egreat is the first Chinese high-definition player to go online in the overseas B2C market, and it has found that many customers favor its products. Chinese products are considered cost efficient and favored in foreign countries; however, entering the foreign B2C market was considered an unwise move when the global economy went into recession and purchasing power was falling. Yet Egreat found its own shining point as a leading brand.

In this economic setting, some may hesitate to purchase a more expensive high-definition player with the expectation that there must be a more cost-effective product available. Egreat’s B2C shopping mall makes such products readily available online, and the company has been quick to grasp customers’ needs in a short time, thanks to Egreat’s ownership of advanced technology, rich industry experience and independent and sustainable development capabilities. Egreat’s B2C shopping mall meets the requirements of different countries such as Russia, Ukraine, and other central and Eastern Europe countries. Besides an English version, Egreat offers a Russian language version to satisfy more customers’ needs.

As a Chinese enterprise focused on the overseas market, Egreat has increased its research and development investment to significantly increase its capability in this field. Sales volume has also increased in Europe and America, with the products receiving positive feedback. In this ideal environment,  Egreat’s Android 4.0 TV STICK H5 enters the world market.

About Egreat

Egreat is a high-technology enterprise dedicated to producing, researching, developing and marketing high-definition players and offering relevant service for such players. The company was founded in 2006; it has a RD and manufacturing integrated production base, of which the annual total production capacity reaches one million units.

As the world’s first researcher of USB 2.0 slave high-definition player technology, Egreat has won awards as a national high-technology enterprise in China and the title of the most popular brand of high-definition player for five years in a row. In 2013, Egreat became the first Chinese high-definition player manufacturer to go online with its strong audio and visual products in the European and U.S. B2C markets.

Egreat’s Android 4.0 TV STICK H5 model adopted two design appearance patents, including a wingspan antenna with 180 degree rotatable HDMI connector. The wingspan antenna has resolved thoroughly a WIFI signal problem and the connection is more effective, allowing a connection to televisions, projectors and other broadcasting equipment without adapter plugs or coupling. It has adopted the most advanced A9 dual-core processor and android 4.0 top level platform framework, so processing speed has improved, and compatibility and expansion capability has been reinforced accordingly. Users can customize the product, regardless of whether they use Apple or Android systems, and they can upload video, pictures and music to the large screen to share with friends and relatives. The Android 4.0 TV STICK H5 has resolved its heat emission problem, with testing showing that the temperature holds at 40 degrees Celsius after running for 24 hours. Additionally, non-dysfunction and zero radiation has been tested and approved by RoHS verification; meanwhile, it supports mobile phones, mouse, remote controllers and air mouse controllers.

Android Tablet Pre-Loads NuWallet As Featured App

DALLAS, Jan. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – NuWallet, Inc., a mobile personal information management and on-line payment application provider, announced the NuWallet app will be pre-loaded on all Android tablets by Rapids Wireless Corporation.

The NuWallet app serves as a digital wallet for mobile devices providing users complete privacy and security of their personal information, while also giving consumers flexibility in their on-line payment options – all in a simple-to-use and easy-to-manage application.

“Rapids Wireless was looking for a unique app that would securely protect the user’s personal information,” said David Thompson, CEO of Rapids Wireless. He further stated “tablets are the consumer’s device of choice for accessing and storing personal information and quickly becoming the ‘de-facto’ device for shopping over the Internet. Having NuWallet pre-loaded on all of our tablets re-enforces the need to provide secure, useful applications for our customers.”

In a feature called “MyNotes“, the NuWallet app securely stores sensitive information such as passwords; banking/investment/payment account numbers; health prescription data; insurance information; airline and hotel loyalty programs; car information, etc. “By storing personal information within the NuWallet app, it returns control of information security to the owner,” said George Hendrix, President of NuWallet. “This technology all but eliminates the ability for a hacker to gain access to the user’s personal information which is encrypted and can only be accessed by entering the user’s unique security PIN. Having NuWallet pre-loaded on Rapid Wireless’ tablets confirms the growing importance of protecting the mobile user’s personal information,” Hendrix added.

As tablets become more ubiquitous as the standard platform for on-line shopping, Internet-based merchants can now integrate NuWallet’s technology to enable their customers a quick, single-tap check-out for mobile, on-line commerce transactions. The consumer has the ability to select which payment instrument they wish to use (i.e. debit card, credit card, merchant card, etc.) at the moment of check-out. This greatly simplifies the on-line mobile payment process and enables the purchase to be completed in just a few seconds.

Not only is the NuWallet app pre-loaded on the Rapids Wireless tablet, it is also available for free at Apple’s App Store and at Google Play for iPhone or Android mobile devices.

About NuWallet:

NuWallet is a patent-pending technology of NuWallet, Inc. and was founded by a team of industry veterans with a vast amount of experience in credit card processing; merchant services; banking and cash management, and the Internet-security industry.

Android Extends Lead Over Apple, Research Firms Say

NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Sales of Android smartphones are rising dramatically, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, with almost half a billion Android phones sold last year.

Strategy Analytics estimates that 152.1 million Android smartphones were shipped, or sold, globally in the fourth quarter of 2012, almost doubling from 80.6 million units a year earlier.

“Android’s share of the smartphone market has surged from 51% to 70% over the past year, crushing Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake,” wrote Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, in a statement. “Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time.”

See if (AAPL) is in our portfolio

Some 479 million smartphones built around the Google (GOOG) mobile OS were sold in 2012, up from 238.9 million in 2011.

The growth of Android is driven by the likes of Samsung, which recently reported impressive fourth-quarter profit, boosted by “solid sales” of its Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 devices. The gadget maker, however, doesn’t report specific numbers for its products.

Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, though, still holds a significant chunk of the iPhone market. Some 47.8 million Apple iOS smartphones were sold during the fourth quarter of 2012, up from 37 million a year earlier, although the operating system’s share decreased slightly year over year, from 23.6% to 22%.

Some 135.8 million iOS phones were sold in 2012, compared with 93 million in 2011.

“Combined, Apple and Android accounted for a record 92% share of all smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter of 2012,” wrote Scott Bicheno, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics. “The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs.”

Another tech research firm, IDC, also reported that Samsung has increased its smartphone lead over Apple. The Korean tech giant sold 63.7 million units for a 29% market share in the fourth quarter, according to IDC, up from 36.2 million units and 22.5% share a year earlier.

During the fourth quarter of 2012, Apple sold 47.8 smartphones for 21.8% of the market, IDC said, compared with 37 million smartphones and a 23% share from a year earlier.
